Antonio Guterres of Portugal unanimously appointed Secretary General-designate

The UN General Assembly, on the recommendation of the UN Security Council, unanimously appointed Mr. Antonio Guterres of Portugal as the next Secretary General of the United Nations, today (13 October 2016). The Presidential text appointing the new UNSG was adopted by the Assembly by acclamation at 10.16 AM (NY time).

His Excellency President Maithripala Sirisena is congratulated by Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs and other Ministers moments after he delivered the National Address to the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly on 21 September 2016. This was the second time His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena addressed the United Nations in his capacity as President of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka co-hosted a Pledging Conference to Refinance the Secretary General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF).held on 21st September 2016 at the UN Headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the 71st sessions of the United Nations General Assembly.  Sri Lanka together with Kenya, Mexico, The Netherlands, Somalia, Sweden, Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom co- hosted the event.

Sri Lanka and Monaco established formal diplomatic relations today (26/7). H.E. Dr. Rohan Perera, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations and his Monaco counterpart H.E. Mrs. Isabelle Picco signed the Joint Communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York.

World Youth Skills Day celebrated in New York

The World Youth Skills Day was celebrated for the second consecutive time on 15th July 2016 at the United Nations Headquarters. The event was organized by the Permanent Missions of Sri Lanka and Portugal, the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy for Youth, ILO and UNESCO. Resolution A/C.3/69/L.13/Rev.1, promoted by Sri Lanka was adopted in November 2014, declaring 15 of July as a day dedicated to the development of youth skills.
