Sri Lanka was among the 171 countries that signed the Paris Agreement today (22) at the High- Level Signature Ceremony of the Paris Agreement held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This high-level signature ceremony is the culmination of negotiations held amongst member states who agreed on the landmark climate deal during the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) held in Paris in December, last year.
Hon. Sagala Ratnayaka, Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development today (20th) addressed the UN General Assembly and highlighted the need for all international actors to come together to combat the world drug problem. He also briefed the Assembly on the steps that Sri Lanka has taken in its national capacity to address this issue.

The Consultations Task Force on Reconciliation Mechanisms, appointed by the Prime Minister, has opened online submissions in order to seek the views of stakeholders, experts, and the general public on the design of the reconciliation mechanisms. The online submission questionnaire is now live on the tri-lingual website of the Secretariat for Coordinating Reconciliation Mechanisms, “www.scrm.gov.lk”.
Sri Lanka actively participated at the Sixtieth Commission for the Status of Women (CSW) held at the United Nations in New York, with high-level engagement from the government as well as by civil society. This included three side events co-hosted by the Sri Lanka Permanent Mission to New York.
President Maithripala Sirisena, in a message to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Akihito, expressed his deepest condolences and sympathies to the victims of the earthquake that struck the Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan on the 14th and 16th of April 2016. Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Hon. Chandrani Bandara Jayasingha delivered a statement today (15th March 2016) during the general discussion of the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The priority theme of this year’s CSW60 is ‘Women’s Empowerment and its link to sustainable development.’ In her statement, Ms. Jayasingha noted the importance of empowering women in order to ensure the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.
