Sri Lanka elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council

Sri Lanka has been elected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the elections held in New York, on 07 June 2024, for a three-year term commencing on 01 January 2025.

Sri Lanka obtained 182 votes, of the 189 member states present and voting, securing the 2nd highest vote count from the region, and the 7th highest number overall. Sri Lanka was previously elected to the ECOSOC from 1985 – 1989 and from 2006 – 2008.

As a member of the ECOSOC, Sri Lanka will contribute to the Council’s efforts and programmes, which include eradication of poverty, food security, financing for development, reform of the international financial architecture to better support vulnerable countries, climate justice, gender equality and women’s empowerment, rights of persons with disabilities, science and technology, and bridging the digital divide.

The 18 countries that were elected on 07 June 2024 to the 54 member states of the ECOSOC, include Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia from the Asia Pacific region.

Vesak Day Almsgiving hosted at Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in New York

Celebrating the significance of Vesak week, the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in New York hosted an almsgiving to the Buddhist Monks in the Tri-State area on 14th May 2024.  20 monks representing Buddhist Viharas around New York, which included New York Buddhist Vihara, Staten Island Buddhist Vihara Meditation Center & Healing Garden, New Jersey Buddhist Vihara, Long Island Buddhist Meditation Centre, the New England Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Centre, Mahamevna Buddhist Meditation Centers of New York & New Jersey and Connecticut Meditation Center/Connecticut Buddhist Vihara graced the occasion and blessed the Ambassador and the mission team for their continued progress.

Sri Lanka Mission in New York hosts “Sri Lanka in Focus 2024” photographic exhibition

The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York welcomed the New York-based diplomatic corps to the Opening of the “Sri Lanka in Focus” 2024 photographic exhibition on 25 April 2024, held in association with the America-Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society of Los Angeles and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB). This exhibition was also facilitated under the Economic Diplomacy Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.This event showcased over 80 images capturing the natural beauty, wildlife, and rich heritage of Sri Lanka. The exhibition was open to the public on 26th April 2024.
