Fiji’s Honorary Consul in San Francisco, Mr Jay Singh today donated FJD$32,000 to the Prime Minister’s National Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund for TC Yasa.

Fiji’s Prime Minister, Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama called on World Leaders to ensure that all countries have equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.

The United Nations convened a special virtual meeting of World Leaders last week in New York to discuss the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and chart a way forward for global recovery.

Fiji’s Prime Minister joined nearly 100 World leaders at this historic two day meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This has been the largest meeting of World leaders since the beginning of the pandemic.

In 2000, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed a historic resolution on “Women, Peace and Security”. The resolution called on countries to bring women into the heart of UN peace operations; into mediation and conflict resolution; into peace processes and at the table of peace settlements.

Fiji joined the United Nations in marking the World Food Day on 16th October, 2020. Officials from the Office of the President and Ministry of Foreign Affairs connected virtually with Rome, Italy to represent Fiji at this important event in the United Nations calendar.

Fiji’s participation is especially significant with the selection of President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote as the Eminent Champion of the Food System Summit that will be convened by the UN Secretary General Mr. António Guterres in October next year.

Fiji today marked 50 years of its membership in the United Nations (UN). In a specially organised commemorative event, the Office of the President in collaboration with the Fiji’s Permanent Mission in New York, marked 50 years of Fiji’s remarkable engagement with the United Nations, since 13th of October 1970.

In a virtual reception held this morning at the State House, the Fijian President Major-General (Ret'd) Jioji Konusi Konrote conveyed Fiji’s statement to commemorate the 50 years of Fiji’s work in the United Nations.

Fiji joined the United Nations on 13th of October 1970, the first Pacific island state to do so. Over the next two decades we welcomed our Pacific neighbours into the UN. We entered the UN with aspirations among our people that Fiji had something good to give to the world and something larger to gain from a multilateral pursuit of peace and multilateral cooperation for the protection of our natural world.

Prime Minister, Hon. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama delivered a powerful statement today at the UN virtual meeting on “Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) Leaders Event”, held at the margins of UNGA 75.

In reflecting on Fiji’s message conveyed at the Global Smart Energy Summit, PM Bainimarama said that there is a need for countries of the world to embrace firm commitments to curb their emissions –– particularly those with highly-developed economies.

“I made it clear that these commitments, whether for 2030 or 2050, are not aimless targets. They are life-or-death deadlines.
