PERMANENT MISSION OF FIJI TO THE UNITED NATIONS

Mission History:

Fiji became the 127th member of the United Nations on 13th October 1970, just three days after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. Despite its small population of less than one million, Fiji has made significant contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, with nearly 1,000 soldiers deployed mainly in the Middle East since 1978. Fiji's participation in the United Nations is remarkable for a nation of its size, reflecting its active and dedicated role. Additionally, Fiji has been a prominent leader in the South Pacific region, playing a crucial role in the formation of the South Pacific Forum and championing the causes of Pacific Island countries.

The Permanent representative of Fiji to the United Nations is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Cuba, Canada and the International Seabed Authority (ISA).
