PSIDS REAFFIRM COMMITMENT TO A “NUCLEAR FREE WORLD”

Fijian Prime Minister, Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama in his capacity as the Chair of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS), called on World Leaders to advance the United Nation’s mandate to create a “Nuclear Free World.”

Delivering a statement today on behalf of PSIDS at the “Commemoration and Promotion of International Day against Nuclear Explosions,” an event hosted by the President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, His Excellency Volkan Bozkir, at the margins of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 75).

Fijian Prime Minister, Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama joined the United Nations and global leaders in helping to shape a bold and comprehensive plan to fund a resilient global recovery post COVID-19.

PM Bainimarama joined the Canadian Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Justin Trudeau; Prime Minister of Jamaica, Rt. Hon Andrew Holness and the UN Secretary General His Excellency, António Guterres in welcoming policy proposals for “Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the era of COVID19 and Beyond” at a Leaders Event.

Fiji’s Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama delivered a powerful statement at the historic 75th General Assembly of the United Nations this morning, calling for global solidarity, commitment and urgency in rebuilding the global economy suffering from the twin devastations caused by climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Bainimarama said climate change and the coronavirus may be very different beasts but the inequities they have exposed are all-too-familiar for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) commenced at the United Nations (UN), at New York headquarters this morning. Over 150 Prime Ministers’ and President’s participated in this historic event commemorated on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the UN.

The Year 2020 signifies the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Founded at the end of the 2nd World War, the UN has evolved into the most important body for global governance, international peace and security and development.

Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Satyendra Prasad joined UN leaders in calling for the generous support to the new Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR).

The Fund, a first of its kind was launched on the margins of the UN General Assembly on 16th September to mobilise financial support. The GFCR is a financial instrument that brings together Government and private finance for implementing programs that seek to build the resilience of coral reefs.

Fiji Calls on UN Security Council for Action on Growing Security Implications of Climate Change

Fiji’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Dr Satyendra Prasad has called on the United Nations Security Council to recognise that climate change poses growing threats to international peace and security.

Speaking on behalf of the Fijian Prime Minister, in a special UN Security Council meeting Chaired by Germany’s Foreign Minister Mr Heiko Maas on 24 July, Ambassador Prasad said that the growing security dimensions of climate change remains to be systematically addressed by the UN.

In a historic event that unfolded this week at the margins of World Oceans Day, Fiji has become the founding member of the new Group of Friends established at the United Nations to combat Marine Plastic Pollution.

Presently, 46 member states of the United Nations (UN) has joined the Group of Friends.

The new group aims formulate robust responses at global level to enhance awareness and swift actions taken to combat marine plastic pollution and it is a collaborative initiative co-chaired by Antigua and Barbuda, the Maldives and Norway.

CANADA’S PRIME MINISTER RT HON JUSTIN TRUDEAU ANNOUNCES $9.5 MILLION SUPPORT FOR CLIMATE FINANCE FOR THE PACIFIC

At a virtual meeting at the United Nations, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today announced a major new program of support to the Pacific Islands.

Prime Minister Trudeau said that “small countries had limited capacity to navigate the complex world of climate finance. They often lacked the dedicated technical support needed to develop projects through to their implementation stages”.

Fiji’s Prime Minister and Canadian Prime Minister had discussed this challenge during their virtual meeting two weeks ago.
