Fiji Represented at the UN ECOSOC Meeting on Sustainable Recovery

Fiji has been represented at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) High Level meeting held earlier this week. Based on the theme, “Financing a Sustainable Recovery from COVID19,” the meeting enabled a wide range of policy discussions on exploring financing options for effective mobilisation of resources and global partnership for proactive recovery and rebuilding economic activities and social wellbeing.

The United Nations commemorated International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Friday 29th May 2020. The Dag Hammarskjold Medal ceremony is held annually on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

The Dag Hammarskjold Medal is posthumously awarded to honor peacekeepers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, in the service of peace.

Three Fijian Peacekeepers were posthumously awarded with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal in 2020.

The late Warrant Officer Class Two Kolinio Mocevakaca died whilst serving with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq.

Fijian Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama joined the UN Secretary General António Guterres in calling for global leadership to secure financing for Development in the Era of COVID-19 and beyond.

The UNSG together with the Prime Ministers of Canada and Jamaica co-convened urgent virtual discussions to draw attention to the financing needed to respond to the social and economic impacts of COVID-19 on developing countries.

This was alluded to at a virtual meeting held today between People’s Republic of China and the Pacific Small Island Countries (PSIDS) on strengthening collaboration towards containing COVID-19.

President of United Nations General Assembly to Visit Fiji this Week

The strong relationship between the United Nations and Fiji will again be on display with the arrival of the President of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Dr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande to Fijian soil.

As a show of Fiji’s heightened relations with the United Nations, the President of the United Nations General Assembly will make his first official visit to Fiji this week from 5th to 8th March, 2020. The visit attests to the unwavering commitment and collaboration between Fiji and the United Nations since Fiji become a member in 1970.
