Fiji attends the Global Compact on Migration Meeting in Morocco

Migration is one of the most challenging and controversial features of modern reality, together with climate change and disasters.
 
This year in July, State parties of the United Nations agreed to a text for a Global Compact on Migration to guide countries on policies for cross border migration.

As a Pacific Island nation, we continue to punch above our weight in terms of playing a leadership role in the in­ternational arena.

From COP23 presidency, Presidency of the UN General Assembly, to chairing the G77, it is safe to say that we are a trailblazing na­tion. And once again this rings true after Fiji was offered a seat in the United Nations Hu­man Rights Council.

Fiji was elected to the United Nations Hu­man Rights Council last week at the UN Gen­eral Assembly. Fiji received 187 votes. The membership is for a period of three years beginning on January 1, 2019.

Fiji has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council today at the UN General Assembly.  Fiji received 187 votes

Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Nazhat Shameem Khan said it was a historic day for Fiji.

“A historic day for Fiji today, but also an affirmation of the value of good team effort between Suva, Geneva and New York.”

She said it was a strong statement of confidence in Fiji.

The membership is for a period of three years beginning January 1, 2019.

“Fiji will soon celebrate national elections for the second time since our return to democracy. I say celebrate with a purpose, because truly free elections are the very starting point for democracy and freedom.”

This was the message by the Fijian Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama while delivering his national address at the 73rd United Nations General Assembly hall in New York.

Prime Minister Bainimarama said he is proud of what Fiji has accomplished in the Fijian democracy.

Fijian Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama met with United Nations Secretary General His Excellency António Guterres along the margins of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting was held before the Prime Minister took the stage to deliver his national statement.

In the meeting the Secretary General, thanked the Prime Minister for championing climate change globally.

Fijian Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama held bilateral meeting with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Hon. Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the United Nations headquarters.

In their meeting, Prime Minster Bainimarama reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to further strengthen relations through this meeting and taking Fiji and Vietnam’s partnership to a new level as both countries explore new areas for co-operation.

From left-right; President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands H.E Hilda Heine with the Fijian Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama have joined hands to become the first countries to signal their unreserved intention to raise ambition of Nationally Determined Contributions by 2020.

Fiji and the Republic of Marshall Islands are the first two countries to signal their unreserved intention to raise the ambition of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) by 2020.

This announcement was made by the Fijian Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama at the One Planet Summit in New York.

Prime Minister Bainimarama said Fiji will be engaging all sectors of the economy to prepare a long-term decarbonisation strategy for net-zero emissions by 2050, which will inform the preparation of the new NDC.
