Issuance of Emergency Passports

Emergency passports (valid for a maximum of 06 months)
 
Emergency passports will be issued at this Consular Division with the authority under the Immigrants and Emigrants Act. of Sri Lanka.
 
In case of emergency if the current passport has expired and there is insufficient time to apply for a new passport prior travel date or current passport doesn’t have the minimum validity period required for airlines (06 months) applicants are able to obtain an emergency travel document.
 
Emergency travel documents will be issued only on urgent circumstances and cannot be used to travel to countries other than Sri Lanka or for extensions of visas.
 
Compulsory Documents
  • Duly filled application (download)
  • Letter of request
  • Confirmed air ticket / travel itinerary
  • 03 Photographs (standard photo format)
  • Original Sri Lankan Birth Certificate (Translated copies are not accepted)
  • Most recent Sri Lankan passport (if available)
  • Police complaint / Entry record (on failure to provide the current passport)
  • Sri Lankan National Identity Card (if available)

 

The Prescribed Fee (Emergency Passport)

  • If current passport provided                               -  USD 54.00
  • If current passport lost                                        -  USD 169.00
  • If the new passport has been applied  for      -  USD 29.00
 
According to the Sri Lankan Immigration Regulations, Sri Lankan Citizens who have applied and gained refugee status or asylum in the USA are not entitled to a Sri Lankan passport and also to renew validity of their existing passports. However, emergency travel documents will be issued to the following categories of Sri Lankans for the sole purpose of returning to Sri Lanka.
  • Those who have applied for refugee or asylum status and awaiting a decision of the US government.
  • Those who have applied for refugee or asylum status but have subsequently withdrawn their applications.
  • Those who have given up their refugee or asylum status and decided to return to Sri Lanka.
  • Those whose applications for asylum or refugee status have been rejected by the US government in which such status has been sought.
 
Processing Time
Upon approval, the emergency passport will be issued within 01-02 working days.
 
Further, applicants are advised to be vigilant regarding the expiry date of emergency passport and their travel date since some airlines are enforced the validity period of the passport to be a minimum of 06 months.

Applicants are needed to be present at this Consular Division in person to submit the application and the documents.

Note:
  • Applicants are strictly required to present the originals of the documents required with the application. Translated copies of any document are not acceptable.
  • Submission of forged documents and making false declarations relating to citizenship is a punishable offense. Fees will not be refunded in these circumstances.
  • Incomplete applications will be rejected.
 
Payment Options
Payments should be done at this Mission by cash / money orders / bank drafts /cheques.
 
Money orders / Certified cheques should be made payable to the “Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, New York”.
 
Card payments are not acceptable.
 
Return of the documents
Emergency travel documents are returned only to the holder of the travel document and need to be present at this Consular Division in person.
 
Emergency travel documents are not sending by post in any way.
