Progress of SAMOA Pathway reviewed five years following its adoption at the 2014 SIDS Conference in Samoa 27th September 2019

The High level meeting to review the progress of SAMOA Pathway was held 27th September 2019 at the UN Headquarters in New York.  The President of the General Assembly, UN Secretary General and the Prime Ministers of Fiji and Ireland spoke at the opening.  They also invited a youth representative from Papua New Guinea and Hawaii-born “Aquaman” star, who is of Native Hawaiian descent, Jason Momoa to address the meeting.  “Island nations contribute the least to this disaster, but are made to suffer the weight of its consequences,” he said.

The general debate of the 74th session of the General Assembly was held from 24 – 30 September 2019.  This is the annual debate for world leaders to gather at UN Headquarters to discuss global issues. The theme for this year is “Galvanizing multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion.”

The High Level Week of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly is convened from 23rd to 27th September 2019 with five (5) High Level Summits and Dialogues starting with the Climate Summit, The Universal Health Coverage Summit, the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (SDG Summit), the Financing for Development High Level Dialogue and to end with the High level meeting on the Mid Term Review of the SAMOA Pathway.

            On Wednesday 10th July 2019, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Independent State of Samoa, Honorable Fiame Naomi Mataafa delivered the key note address during the “Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) session on Empowering People and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality: Perspective of SIDS including main findings from mid-term review of the SAMOA Pathway” at the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York.

The sixty third session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63) was held from the 11th – 22nd March 2019, at the United Nations Headquarters, New York. Hon. Faimalotoa Iemaima Kolotita Stowers AH-KAU, Minister for Women, Community and Social Development led Samoa’s delegation which included her Ministry’s CEO and two ACEO’s plus the Samoa Mission staff. The CSO representative from Nuanua O Le Alofa (NOLA) was also part of the Samoa delegation.

The Government of the Republic of Suriname hosted the inaugural High Level Conference on Climate Finance Mobilization for High Forest Cover, Low Deforestation (HFLD) developing countries from 12th – 15th February 2019.  The conference aimed at strengthening the collaboration and motivation of HFLD countries to keep their forests intact by joining forces and producing a shared global action plan, to contributing to the goal to cap global temperatures at 1.5 degrees.

The Prime Minister of Samoa, Honourable Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi addressed the UN General Assembly on Friday 28th September 2018 where he emphasized that “climate change is one of the most pressing security challenges for island countries” and that for Samoa “climate change embodies the fullness of Samoa’s realities and aspirations” impacting on society, the economy, the Samoan culture, faith and peoples way of life.

The Prime Minister of Samoa, Honourable Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi  spoke at the High Level Events during the United Nations General Assembly Leaders week in the United Nations Headquarters, New York September 2018 which discussed the need for urgent global response to Tuberculosis and Non Communicable Diseases . Honourable Prime Minister spoke of the burden of these diseases on Pacific small island developing states like Samoa, and highlighted some of the regional and national responses to these epidemics.
