Permanent Representative Message

Monday, January 9, 2017

Today, 9 January 2017, His Excellency Neville Gertze, the new Permanent Representative of Namibia to the United Nations, was the very first Permanent Representative to present his credentials to His Excellency Antonio Guterres, the new United Nations Secretary-General. Mr Guterres took office on 1 January 2017.

During the discussions H. E. Mr Gertze conveyed the best wishes of His Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia, and his assurance of support and cooperation as the new SG leads the Organisation.

The new Permanent Representative reminded Mr Guterres that Namibia was a child of the United Nations and that the country had worked hard to preserve and nurture peace and development. In this regard, therefore, Namibia stands as a success story of the United Nations peace process. Namibia also continues to support peace efforts around the world, currently supporting five peace operations.

Mr Gertze also brought to the attention of the Secretary-General the recent drought that had impacted heavily on Namibia, saying that Namibia would like to see a renewed focus on the Namib Declaration of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which had been held in Namibia in September 2013.

Mr Gertze emphasised that Namibia was focused on the eradication of poverty and as such was implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Secretary-General congratulated Namibia for being a steadfast partner of the United Nations, contributing to its successes.

Ambassador Gertze is a diplomat with a long career behind him. He most recently served as Chief of Protocol in Namibia and prior to that he was Ambassador of Namibia to the Federal Republic of Germany from 2009 to 2015. He was also accredited to the Vatican, Poland, and Turkey. From 2003 to 2008 H.E. Mr Gertze was the Namibian High Commissioner to Malaysia and also accredited to the Philippines and Thailand. Mr Gertze served as Commercial Counsellor to the Republic of South Africa and First Secretary (Economics) at the Namibian Embassies in Pretoria and Washington respectively.

He has a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Midrand Graduate Institute and a Bachelor of Social Science from the University of Cape Town. H.E. Mr Gertze is married with two children.
