JCF TO GET 200 ADDITIONAL MOTOR VEHICLES

KINGSTON, March 21 (JIS):

The Ministry of National Security will be acquiring 200 additional motor vehicles for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), at a cost of approximately $418 million.

Portfolio Minister, Hon. Robert Montague, noted that these will include 120 pickups and 80 motor cars.

“We are hopeful that with this purchase to improve mobility, we will see much more from our officers,” he said.

 The Minister was speaking at the presentation of a Mitsubishi Rosa bus, valued at $7.6 million, to the Jamaica Police Federation on March 20.

FUTURIST URGES GOVERNMENT TO UNDERPIN GROWTH INITIATIVES WITH FOCUS ON EDUCATION

KINGSTON, March 21 (JIS):

World-renowned Futurist, Edie Weiner, has urged the Government to underpin growth initiatives with a fundamental focus on education, as half of the country’s population is below the age of 25.

“You have to be thinking about putting almost all of your resources into the future of your economy,” she said.

Ms. Weiner was speaking at an International Women’s Forum (IWF) event, held on March 20 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, in New Kingston.

FATALITIES DOWN 33 PER CENT

KINGSTON, March 20 (JIS):

            The police are reporting a 33 per cent decrease in the number of road fatalities since the start of the year.                                                                                                                                

Statistics out of the Traffic and Highway Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) indicate that up to March 19, there have been 62 road fatalities compared with 92 for the corresponding period last year.                                                                                           

JUDGES NOW HAVE BENEFIT OF CRIMINAL BENCH BOOK

KINGSTON, March 20 (JIS):

            Jamaica now has a Criminal Bench Book, which will better aid trial judges in directing juries in criminal cases.

            This Bench Book, which was officially launched at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston on Friday (March 17), provides judicial officers with a single publication to which they can turn for guidance in crafting summations to juries.

            It will save judicial time in the preparation of summations, and assist in the delivery of consistently predictable, accurate and clear directions to the jury.

KPH AIMING FOR MORE MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERIES

The Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) is moving towards reducing overcrowding and having less inpatient days by improving access to minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Senior Medical Officer (SMO) at the facility, Dr. Natalie Whylie, explains that the country will benefit more when persons are able to recuperate faster as a result of MIS.                    

INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC SCIENCE GETS EQUIPMENT TO BOOST SERVICE

The forensic capabilities of the security forces have been boosted, following the acquisition of a BULLETRAX-3D System by the Institute of Forensic Science and Legal Medicine.

This system will capture digital images on the surface of bullets, match them with existing images in the police database, suggest potential matches with other bullets and strengthen the Institute’s capacity to collect information from ammunition.

PARADE GARDENS RESIDENTS BENEFIT FROM FREE LEGAL SERVICE

            Residents of the Parade Gardens community in Central Kingston are the latest to benefit from the services of the Legal Aid Council’s Mobile Justice Unit.

            The unit was in the community on Monday (March 20) from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to provide free legal advice to residents.

            Attorney-at-law, Sue-Ann Lowe, who is a legal consultant for the unit, told JIS News that residents were grateful for the services provided.
