HEART SKILLS VILLAGE FOR CASFEST EXPOSITION

KINGSTON, March 9 (JIS):

The Human Employment and Resource Training Trust/National Training Agency (HEART Trust/NTA) will be hosting a ‘Try-a-Skill’ Village at the Social Development Commission’s (SDC) Creative Arts and Skills Festival (CASfest) on Friday, March 10 at the Claude Stewart Park in Port Maria, St. Mary.

The village will allow interested patrons to participate in activities designed to determine their competence in specialist skill areas.

BARBADIAN OFFICIAL IN JAMAICA CSME MEETINGS

The CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) National Focal Point for Barbados, Paula Byer, is visiting Jamaica for one week of meetings with representatives of public- and private-sector entities administering the five CSME Regimes.

The Regimes cover the free movement of goods, skills and capital as well as the provision of services and the right of establishment.

SDC TO HOST ‘CASFEST’ IN PORT MARIA

KINGSTON, March 9 (JIS):

The Social Development Commission (SDC) will be hosting a Creative Arts and Skills Festival, dubbed ‘CASfest’, on Friday, March 10, at the Claude Stewart Park in Port Maria, St. Mary.

The festival aims to provide an opportunity for residents of the town and wider parish to showcase their entrepreneurial creativity and innovation.

CASfest, which supports the SDC’s Local Economic Development Support Programme (LEDSP) in St. Mary, provides a platform for grassroots initiatives and micro-entrepreneurship.

MOBILE JUSTICE UNIT CONTINUES COMMUNITY OUTREACH

KINGSTON, March 8 (JIS):

            The Legal Aid Council (LAC) in the Ministry of Justice is continuing its community outreach this month through its Mobile Justice Unit.

            The unit, which began operations in January 2017, provides free consultation, advice, and completes court assignments for clients with criminal matters.

             Executive Director of the LAC, Hugh Faulkner, told JIS News that the unit has been making a great impact.

EIGHT JAMAICA HOUSE FELLOWS SELECTED

            Eight persons have been selected as Jamaica House Fellows and were officially pinned by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, today (March 8).

They are Jerome Cowans, Lavois Cruikshank, Christopher Graham, Karelle Samuda, Andrae Shawn Silburn, Aubrey Stewart, Mark Tracey and Sherona Forrester.

            Prime Minister Holness hailed the awardees, who were selected following a rigorous process that started in June 2016.

JAMAICANS OVER 45 URGED TO GET SCREENED FOR COLON CANCER

KINGSTON, March 8 (JIS):

The Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) is appealing to Jamaicans over the age of 45 to get screened for colon cancer.                 

Speaking in an interview with JIS News, Consultant Gastroenterologist at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UWI) and JCS volunteer, Dr. Mike Mills, noted that colon cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related death in Jamaica in both males and females.                  

TRAINING FOR JPs FROM ST. ANN AND ST. MARY

            Justices of the Peace (JPs) from the parishes of St. Ann and St. Mary are invited to attend a training session on March 10 at the Sandals Ocho Rios Beach Resort, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck, will address the session, while Head of Delegation, European Union, Ambassador Malgorzata Wasilewska, will make the keynote presentation.

GROUND BROKEN FOR RENOVATION AND EXPANSION OF WOMEN’S SHELTER

Ground was broken on Monday (Jan. 30) for the renovation and expansion of the Woman Inc. Crisis Shelter in Kingston to house additional women and children, who are victims of violence. 

The five-month project is being undertaken by the Government through over

$14 million in funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
