NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION AUTHORITY BILL TABLED

KINGSTON, March 22 (JIS):

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, on Tuesday (March 21), tabled a Bill in Parliament to establish the National Identification and Registration Authority.

The proposed National Identification and Registration Act, 2017 and the Authority’s formation are in keeping with the National Identification Project, which Mr. Holness reintroduced last year.

The Registrar General’s Department (RGD), which will be transformed into the Authority, will have responsibility for the project’s implementation.

LANDS IDENTIFIED FOR CONSTRUCTION OF LOGISTICS FACILITIES

The Government has identified strategically located parcels of land for the construction of facilities that will further develop logistics operations in the country.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, said the lands will facilitate construction for warehousing, manufacturing, assembly and other value-added activities.

Mr. Holness was delivering his 2017/18 Budget Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on March 21.

ENTERPRISE TEAM TO LEAD DEVELOPMENT OF LOGISTICS CENTRE

            Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has declared the development of Jamaica as a premier international logistics centre to be a national project.

            He has appointed an Enterprise Team to be responsible for assessing customs and shipping regulation reform, logistics activity zones and logistics investment promotion.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, on Tuesday (March 21), announced the launch of the Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment (HOPE) programme during his 2017/18 Budget Debate presentation in Gordon House.

The HOPE initiative aims to provide educational and job opportunities for young persons, aged 19 to 24 years, who are not employed or enrolled in school or any programme of training.

GOV’T TO ADDRESS OVERCONSUMPTION OF SWEETENED DRINKS

            Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government is considering a “fair” approach to discourage the overconsumption of sweetened drinks.

            In his 2017/2018 Budget presentation in the House of Representatives on

March 21, the Prime Minister noted that more than half the population is overweight and the consumption of sweetened, carbonated soft drinks by young people is too high.

STUDENTS MUST BE GUIDED TO CHOOSE CAREERS

Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Floyd Green, says the job market has become very competitive and students should now be guided as it relates to careers they pursue.

The Minister, who was speaking at the media launch of the MoBay City Run on March 21 at the Holiday Inn Hotel, St. James, said this has taken on special significance, so as to ensure that students graduating from tertiary institutions are able to find jobs in their areas of speciality.

MORE SPACE FOR BPO OPERATIONS

Work is under way by the Port Authority of Jamaica and the Factories Corporation to construct more than 250,000 square feet of new purpose-built space and to retrofit an additional 50,000 square feet of existing buildings for outsourcing service.

This was disclosed by Prime Minister, the Most. Hon. Andrew Holness, during his contribution to the 2017/18 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on March 21.

GOVERNMENT TO APOLOGISE

            The Government is to formally apologise to the victims of State-inflicted violence that occurred in the communities of Coral Gardens in April 1963 and Tivoli Gardens in May 2010.

            Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, made the announcement while making his contribution to the 2017/18 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on March 21.

PM ANNOUNCES NHT GRANTS FOR DISABLED PERSONS

KINGSTON, March 22 (JIS):
Effective July 1, the National Housing Trust (NHT) will provide a grant for mortgagors with disabilities or who reside with and care for family members with disabilities, in a move to meaningfully improve benefits for the disabled.
The grant is to be used to retrofit or upgrade the beneficiary’s dwelling to make it suitable to serve the needs of the disabled person.
This was announced by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, in his Budget Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on March 21.

GOV’T WORKING TO PROVIDE MORE HOUSING SOLUTIONS – PM

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government has been working to provide additional housing solutions for Jamaicans.
This, he said, by ensuring that more persons are able to access financing at lower rates, and that technology and best practices are integrated into construction in order to bring housing to the market at more affordable rates.
