KINGSTON, March 22 (JIS):

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government is considering a “fair” approach to discourage the overconsumption of sweetened drinks.

In his 2017/2018 Budget presentation in the House of Representatives on

March 21, the Prime Minister noted that more than half the population is overweight and the consumption of sweetened, carbonated soft drinks by young people is too high.

“It is estimated that three out of four students drink a soda (carbonated beverage) one or more times per day,” he noted.

He said instructions have been given to the Education, Youth and Information, and Health Ministers to examine ways in which sugar could be reduced or removed from formulations sponsored and served by the Government in public education institutions.

The Prime Minister also wants the launch and development of a public education campaign about the effects of overconsumption of sugar.

Mr. Holness is encouraging more Jamaicans to become physically active.

“Remember, 150 minutes (21/2hrs) per week of brisk walking and stretching is a good start. Cut down on sugary and fatty foods, quit smoking and moderate on alcohol intake,” he advised.

It is expected that Health Minister, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, will say more on the plans of the Government to actively promote a healthy lifestyle among Jamaicans during his Sectoral presentation.
