Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Hilton Todd, last evening met with Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, His Excellency Ahmed Attaf, in New York ahead of the United Nations Security Council elections fixed for Tuesday June 6, 2023. Both Guyana and Algeria are seeking election for non-permanent seats on the Council for the 2024-2025 term.

The Honourable Hugh Hilton Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, last evening delivered the keynote address at a reception hosted by the Permanent Mission of Guyana to the United Nations in New York ahead of the United Nations Security Council Elections which will be held on Tuesday June 6, 2023. Guyana is seeking election as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2024-2025 term. Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, the Honourable Oneidge Walrond, was also in attendance.

H.E. Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett participated today, in the 2023 UN Security Council Briefing Series for non-contested candidates and presented Guyana's vision and priorities for its term on the UN Security Council. Guyana's candidacy is uncontested, being the sole candidate for a single seat available to the Latin America and Caribbean region. The election for the five incoming members will be held on 6th June 2023. Those elected will serve a two-year term on the Council from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025.

The Honourable Hugh Hilton Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, today met with Permanent Representatives of the Group of Latin America and Caribbean States (GRULAC) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The Minister took the opportunity to present to the Group Guyana’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2024-2025 term and to outline Guyana’s vision and priorities once successful.

His Excellency Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali spoke about the impactful role of multilateralism in resolving global challenges, during his address to the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today in New York.

He highlighted difficulties faced at the national, regional and international levels and proposed solutions, especially those that promote fairness at all levels.

Guyana Sponsors Resolution on "International Day of Women in Diplomacy"

Today, the resolution titled “International Day of Women in Diplomacy”, of which Guyana was a main sponsor, was adopted by consensus in the United Nations General Assembly Hall.

The resolution was co-sponsored by a record 191 countries.

As a result, International Day of Women in Diplomacy will be celebrated annually on 24th June.
