POSTPONMENT OF THE UN OCEANS CONFERENCE

In light of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and growing public health concerns, the 2020 United Nations Ocean Conference, which was scheduled to take place from 2 to 6 June in Lisbon, Portugal, has been postponed per decision 74/548 adopted by the General Assembly on Monday, 13 April 2020 at 3:01 p.m. Co-hosts of the Conference Kenya and Portugal in consultation with the General Assembly will decide on possible future dates for the Conference, including timelines for the preparatory process.

Ambassador Lazarus Amayo and other members of the informal advisory committee on Oceans Conference, Ambassador Macharia Kamau, Principal Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya, UN Special Envoy for the Ocean, Amb Peter Thomson and Amb. Lopes, the  Permanent Representative of Portugal to the UN  toured Kwetu Training Center where sustainable land-based aquaculture is helping coastal communities earn a living.

Amb. Raychelle Omamo, Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Monica Juma, Cabinet Secretary Defence, Amb. Macharia Kamau, PS Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Lazurus Amayo, hosted various United Nations Permanent Representatives at a counter-terrorism seminar in Mombasa, Kenya, "Changing Face of Terrorism and Extremism". The meeting aimed to address the various drivers of terrorism and violent extremism and build strategic partnerships to combat them.

Kenya and Portugal to Co-Host UN Ocean Conference from 2-6 June 2020 in Lisbon

The United Nations General Assembly, this morning (May 9, 2019), adopted resolution A/73/L.82 entitled “The 2020 United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”. The Conference will be Co-hosted by Kenya and Portugal in Lisbon, from 2-6, June 2020.

KENYA TO BEGIN ITS TERM AS A MEMBER OF ECOSOC IN JANUARY 2019-2021

New York, November 2018

Kenya will take up its position as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) from January 2019 until December 2021. Kenya was among the 18 countries that were elected to the Council in an election held on 13th June 2018 at the United Nations in New York and garnered 184 votes out of 189 voters. Other Africa countries elected to the council are; Angola, Egypt, Mali and Ethiopia.

The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission Adopts the Peacebuilding Gender Strategy under Kenya’s Chairmanship

The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission adopted, Wednesday, September 7th, 2016, a historic Gender Strategy on gender responsive peace building under the chairmanship of Ambassador Macharia Kamau. The Commission is the first inter-governmental body of the United Nations to adopt its own gender strategy.

The United Nation’s Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki Moon announced Friday May 20, 2016, the appointment of Amb. Macharia Kamau and Mrs. Mary Robinson as Special Envoys on El Niño and Climate.

The appointment comes at a time where several countries in Southern Africa, Horn of Africa, Central America and the Pacific are reeling from the devastating effects of El Nino. The Office of United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that 60 million people have been affected by the crisis.
