JA TO RECEIVE ADDITIONAL FLIGHTS FROM ATLANTA

 

MONTEGO BAY, Dec. 3 (JIS):

The much-anticipated winter tourist season, which officially starts in another two weeks, will be significantly boosted by some 60,000 visitors courtesy of Delta Vacations and the Mexico headquartered, Turissimo Excursions.

The two destination management companies have facilitated a partnership where Jamaica will be receiving a number of weekly additional Delta Airlines flights from Atlanta, Georgia.

Attorney General, Hon. Marlene Malahoo Forte, says the time has come for all Jamaicans to become active participants in the building of a strong country.

Addressing a ceremony to officially launch the Albion Development Committee at the Albion Community Centre in St. James recently, Mrs. Malahoo Forte said now is not the time for people to be self-centred, and Jamaicans must start seeing the value of the positive role they can play in the process of nation building, working alongside the Government.

REGIONAL COURT COMPLEX FOR MANCHESTER

KINGSTON, Nov. 28 (JIS):

            Discussions are in progress for the development of 40 acres of land for a Regional Court Complex in Manchester, says Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck.

            Mr. Chuck, who was addressing a justice sensitisation session in Mandeville, on November 25, said the Ministry has initiated talks with a developer for the complex, and he is inviting other persons to invest in the project.

            Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Senator the Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., has charged the latest batch of correctional officers to carry out their duties with integrity.

 “I emphasise the importance of integrity and that it is something that you must guard with care. I encourage you also to aim to be the best at what you do. Aim high and do not settle for the ordinary,” he said. 

ALCOHOL REMAINS MOST USED DRUG IN JAMAICA

            Alcohol continues to be the most widely used drug in Jamaica, with 40 per cent of the population or four out of every 10 people reporting that they currently use the substance.

This is according to the most recent Household Drug Survey conducted by the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA).

            Seventy-five per cent of the population said that they had used alcohol at some point in their lifetime.

GOV’T MOVES AHEAD WITH PLANS TO CREATE SINGLE ICT REGULATOR

KINGSTON, Nov. 25 (JIS):

The Government is moving ahead with plans to establish a single regulator for the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.

Science, Energy and Technology Minister, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, said the legislative and regulatory changes necessary to facilitate the move are expected to be brought to Parliament in 2017.

He noted that the objective is to ensure cohesion across the sector “thereby creating a more modern fit-for-purpose framework”.

GOV’T TO ESTABLISH NATIONAL SECURITY POLYTECHNIC

KINGSTON, Nov. 26 (JIS):

            The Government plans to establish a security polytechnic institution, which will enable security personnel to earn certification that will put them on a path for higher learning.

            National Security Minister, Hon. Robert Montague, said beneficiaries will include members of the Jamaica Constabulary Fore (JCF), Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), immigration and correctional officers, and security guards.

            He said the training and certification provided will empower them to invest in their own future.
