JAMAICA 4-H CLUBS SIGNS MOU FOR THE TRAINING OF YOUNG PERSONS

KINGSTON, Dec. 5 (JIS):

The Jamaica 4-H Clubs has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Northern Caribbean University (NCU) to facilitate the recruitment and training of youth in technical and vocational education.

In the initial stage, the partnership will focus on supporting and strengthening 4-H Clubs to offer training based on the National Vocational Qualification of Jamaica (NVQ-J) Levels 1 and 2. It is anticipated that the output from this will see an improvement in youth employability and a consistent and competitive workforce.

CRUISE SHIP TO CALL AT PORT OF KINGSTON TOMORROW

            The Port of Kingston is set to welcome its largest ever cruise ship, ‘MS Monarch’, on Tuesday (December 6).

In an interview with JIS News, Vice President, Cruise Shipping and Marina Operations at the Port Authority of Jamaica, William Tatham, said the ‘MS Monarch’, operated by Royal Caribbean’s Pullmantur Brand, is expected to call at Kingston Wharves at 6:00 a.m. with 2,700 passengers on board.

MONTEGO BAY, Dec. 5 (JIS):

The ports of Falmouth, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Kingston will host a combined six cruise vessels on December 6, giving the island’s cruise-shipping industry another significant boost.

This will be the second time in the past four years that so many ships will be simultaneously calling on Jamaica. In 2012, a record seven ships made calls on Falmouth, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Port Antonio.

PRIME MINISTER WELCOMES EXPANDED ATTRACTION IN ST. MARY

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has welcomed the US$1-million expansion and rebranding of the Prospect Outback Attraction in St. Mary as the ‘Yaaman’ Adventure Park.

The new attraction, which was officially opened by Mr. Holness on December 1, is owned and operated by St. Ann businessman and Chairman of Dolphin Cove Limited, Stafford Burrowes.

164 STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS UNDER THE RIO TINTO ALCAN LEGACY FUND

KINGSTON, Dec. 3 (JIS):

Some 164 agriculture students have received scholarships valued at $9.4 million through the Rio Tinto Alcan Legacy Fund.

The scholarships were presented during a function held on December 2 at the Jamaica 4-H Clubs Headquarters in Kingston.

Under the agreement between Rio Tinto and the Jamaica 4-H Clubs, the fund will give assistance to students pursuing agricultural studies at vocational, secondary and tertiary institutions in the parishes of St. Ann, St. Catherine and Manchester.

JAMAICA WINS NINE AWARDS AT WTA CEREMONY

MONTEGO BAY, Dec. 4 (JIS):

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, says the nine awards won by Jamaica at the 23rd World Travel Awards (WTA) ceremony on Friday (December 2) are a testament to the current international value of Brand Jamaica.

Mr. Bartlett said the awards were a vindication of all the hard work and dedication that have been put into enhancing the tourism product and “a ringing endorsement of all the policies and programmes we have been undertaking.”

The education and development outcomes of students attending schools across Southern Trelawny are receiving priority attention through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information’s Quality Education Circle (QEC) 31.

This initiative seeks to ensure that students receive quality education through all levels of the education system.
