JAMAICA CUSTOMS AGENCY URGED TO IDENTIFY OPTIONS TO IMPROVE SERVICE

KINGSTON, Jan. 24 (JIS):

Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Audley Shaw, is challenging the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) to identify options for improving customs activities, in order to optimise the Agency’s capacity for revenue collection.

Noting that efficient customs procedures and processes are important elements in the Government’s drive for economic growth, Mr. Shaw said the JCA must be keen to maximise the detection of revenue leakage while also maintaining trade facilitation.

PUBLIC ACCESS TO EDUCATION FOR 763,798 STUDENTS

KINGSTON, Jan. 24 (JIS):

            The Government provides public access to education for approximately 763,798 students or 71 per cent of the school age cohort (3-24).

          Of this total, 613,136 students are enrolled across 3,000 pre-primary, 995 primary and preparatory schools and 180 high schools, both public and private.                                               

This was disclosed by Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, while addressing an Education World Forum in London, United Kingdom (UK), today (January 24).

FARMERS ENCOURAGED TO PRACTISE CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE

            Minister without Portfolio in the Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry, Hon. J.C. Hutchinson, is encouraging farmers to practise climate-smart agriculture (CSA), to help grow the sector in a sustainable way.

            CSA refers to agriculture that sustainably increases productivity, enhances resilience or adaptation, reduces greenhouse gases where possible, and enhances achievement of national food security and development goals.

165 PERSONS TRAINED AS ENVIRONMENTAL WARDENS

            Some 165 persons from 30 underserved communities across the island have been trained as environmental wardens, under the solid waste management initiative being implemented by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).     

            The environmental wardens have been gazetted under the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) Act and are responsible for enforcing environmental laws across the country, but particularly in their communities.

REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON THE MANAGEMENT OF MARINE RESOURCES

A three-day Regional Workshop on measures to manage marine resources commenced on January 24 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.

          It is being hosted by the British High Commission, under the Caribbean Commonwealth Marine Economies programme, which involves a £5.6 million package of measures to help small island countries reduce poverty by preserving their marine environments, and making the best use of their marine resources.

JSIF SUPPORTS ‘BREAK THE SILENCE’ CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT CHILDREN

The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) has provided support to the Office of the Children’s Registry (OCR) ‘Break the Silence’ campaign in the sum of $11.9 million through the Basic Needs Trust Fund.

The Break the Silence campaign is an initiative with a multi-pronged approach to protect children against abuse.

STATIN URGES PERSONS TO SUPPORT HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURE SURVEY

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) is urging persons to support its household expenditure survey (HES), as information obtained will be strictly confidential.

            “All of our interviewers and all our employees signed an oath of confidentiality and we take that oath seriously, so we want to reassure Jamaicans that the information that they provide is confidential under the Statistics Act and we cannot provide this to any other party,” Project Manager for the HES, Shelly-Ann Chambers, told JIS News.

TERTIARY GRADUATES TO HELP CLEAR BACKLOG AT OCR AND CDA

The National Youth Service (NYS) has assigned 17 tertiary graduates to the Office of the Children’s Registry and the Child Development Agency (CDA) to assist in clearing the backlog of reports.

The graduates, who are participants in the NYS Graduate Work Experience Programme (GWEP), commenced work at the agencies on January 23.
