In a moving solemn occasion, Fijian Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama paid tribute to Fijian peacekeepers that have served in peacekeeping missions at a special wreath laying ceremony held at the North Lawn Memorial within the United Nations headquarters compound.
A minute of silence was observed as the Bugler performed the “Last Post” to remember those Fijian men and women that have sacrificed their lives during their service in peacekeeping missions.
Prime Minister Bainimarama said undeterred by distance or danger, our brave peacekeepers have proven time and again that Fijians see themselves as part of something much bigger.
“Our out sized role in peacekeeping over the years, and the 60 heroic Fijians who laid down their own lives, have earned respect from the international community, and showed the world the very best –– the valour of Fiji.”
“Over these past 40 years, Fijian Peacekeepers have defended the weak, protected the vulnerable, and restored hope to those less fortunate, in dangerous and conflict torn areas around the world.”
He said the legacy of Fijian peacekeepers continues to this day through the nearly 900 men and women currently serving as United Nations Peacekeepers around the world. All are worthy successors to that 40-year legacy of sacrifice, of perseverance and of commitment, which we honour today.
The ceremony was attended by the Fijian delegation and staff from Fiji’s Mission in New York with senior military officials from Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.
