President of the State of Israel to hold first ever Pacific Island Leaders Summit in Fiji this Week

On Thursday, 20 February, Fiji will welcome the President of the State of Israel, His Excellency Reuven Rivlin, to participate in the history-making Pacific Islands Leaders' Summit Meeting –– the first ever to be held with the State of Israel –– before departing for Australia the following day. While in Fiji, President Rivlin will also hold a bilateral meeting with the Hon Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama.

Fiji and Israel began their diplomatic relations in 1970, and the first Israeli President to visit Fiji was His Excellency Chaim Herzog in November 1986.

Fiji Represented at the High-Level Midterm Review of the Implementation of Vienna Program of Action

The United Nations last week convened the High-Level Midterm Review of the implementation of the Vienna Program of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Satyendra Prasad informed Member States at the High-level Midterm Review that SIDS including Fiji faces similar challenges faced by LLDC. Ambassador Prasad stated that SIDS and LLDC are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, desertification, land degradation and drought.

Fiji Calls for Greater Action on Climate Response

A call for action towards responding effectively in addressing climate emergencies has been made at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Debate on Women, Peace and Security held this week at UN in New York.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in his address to the UN Security Council called on members for far greater support to implementing the Women Peace and Security agenda. In 2020, the UN will be marking 20 years since the approval of the historic Resolution 1325 which, brought women into the center stage of the peace and security agenda.

FIJI’S Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) in New York is committed to strengthen its partnership with the United Nations.

This was the key message conveyed at the celebration of Fiji’s 49th Independence, Fiji Day celebrations hosted by the Fiji Mission in New York on October 10th, 2019.

The celebrations was attended by the UN officials, Fiji and Pacific Islanders at the UN and diplomats from around 80 countries.
