Fiji at the International Seabed Authority Meeting

A Fijian Government delegation led by the Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources Malakai Finau is attending the 24th Session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in Kingston, Jamaica.

In his address, Mr Finau stressed the need for “socio-economic impacts on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to be adequately reflected in the “Draft Regulations for Exploitation in the Area”.

Mr Finau added that given the vulnerabilities of SIDS and their reliance on the oceans as a source of livelihood, the draft regulations needed to adequately reflect this.

Discussion on SDGs tops High-Level Forum in New York

Our Parliament needs good data in order to discuss Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) progresses and there’s a need to ensure we maintain constant focus on such goals.

These were the words of the Speaker Hon. Dr Jiko Luveni while addressing the 2018 United Nations High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals yesterday.

Hon. Dr Luveni said Fiji had participated in the forum with eagerness and made firm commitments towards the SDGs.

Dr Luveni leads discussion on Voluntary National Reviews of Cabo Verde and Benin at the UN

The Honorable Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Jiko Luveni this afternoon led a discussion at the United Nations on the margins of the High Level Political Forum convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council.

The discussion focused on Benin and Cabo Verde’s Voluntary National Reviews concerning the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The presentations were made by Mr. Abdoulaye Bio Tchane, Senior Minister for State Planning and Development of Benin and Mr. José da Silva Gonçalves, Minister for Tourism, Tranports and Maritime Economy of Cabo Verde.

The United Nations acknowledged that unbalanced development is a threat to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Achim Steiner, Head of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (USG DESA) Liu Zhenmin and Permanent Representative Ambassador Ma Zhaoxu of China opened a session today at the UN on the need to pursue balanced approaches to development.

Speaker of Parliament arrives for HLPF 2018 at the UN

Speaker of Parliament Hon. Dr Luveni Jiko was briefed on arrival in New York by Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr Satyendra Prasad on the High Level Political Forum of the United Nations.

The High Level Political Forum (HLPF 2018) is the mechanism through which progress made by countries in achieving the 17 2030 Sustainable Development Goals are tracked.  Fiji along with all member states have signed up to these SDGs.

The Honourable Speaker, Dr. Jiko Luveni today participated at the opening high-level segment of the ECOSOC/ Ministerial segment of the 2018 High Level Political Forum on “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies” at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The Fiji Police Commissioner, Brigadier Sitiveni Qiliho, is currently in New York, to attend the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit II, from 20 -21 June 2018 at the United Nations Headquarters.

The Summit brings together senior police leaders and international experts from across the World.

The Summit focusses on challenges to United Nations Peacekeeping and the growing role of policing in maintaining peace, in humanitarian crisis and in conflict zones.

Small Island Developing States Capacity Building Workshop on BBNJ Hosted by AOSIS

The Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations as Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) with the support of the Kingdom of Norway, organized a 4-day capacity building workshop from 29 May – 1 June, for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The training was purposed to provide an in depth technical and practical training for SIDS to enhance its participation and engagement at the upcoming Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) to be held from 4 – 17 September 2018.
