FIJIANS IN UNITED STATES RECOGNISED WITH 50TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS

Permanent Secretary Office of the Prime Minister, Sugar Industry and Permanent Secretary Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yogesh Karan congratulated Fiji’s Honorary Consul Mr. Jay Singh and Professor Roy Krishna for their exemplary service and dedication to Fiji’s development.

Mr. Karan whilst speaking at a ceremony in which Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Satyendra Prasad on behalf of His Excellency the President conferred Fiji’s 50th Anniversary medals, acknowledged the two men's outstanding achievements.

Professor Roy Krishna was recognised for his distinguished career and contributions to medical education, research, and development internationally and for sharing those experiences back in Fiji, notably with restructuring of Fiji School of Medicine within the new National University of Fiji and also for the development of Medical Health Sciences Program launched this year at the University of Fiji’s Umanand Prasad School of Medicine (UPSM).

Fiji’s Honorary Consul in San Francisco Mr. Jay Singh was acknowledged for his tireless efforts in mobilising timely assistance with the support of US community towards Fiji’s recovery efforts following two devastating cyclones in Fiji. He was also recognised for his achievements and contribution to Fiji’s tourism and business sector investment.

While congratulating both Fijians, Mr. Karan said they have demonstrated passion and perseverance to serve the less fortunate and whilst they have attained success in their fields internationally, they have not forgotten Fiji and they continue to reach out and serve.

He said both men are great examples of Fiji’s Foreign policy at work and the Fijian Government is committed to working with its vast diaspora to further advance Fiji’s social and economic development.

Additionally, Mr. Karan said Fiji is incredibly proud of the appointment by UN Secretary-General of Ms. Unaisi Lutu Vuniwaqa as the Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security in the UN’s Department of Safety and Security.

While extending the Fijian Government’s congratulations and best wishes to Ms Unaisi Vuniwaqa for her new role, Mr. Karan said that Ms Vuniwaqa is a fantastic role model for Fijians and Pacific Islanders and her exemplary leadership is a great motivation for Fijians and for youths that with dedication, hard work and perseverance we can achieve the best for our nation.

Both Mr. Singh and Professor Krishna expressed their appreciation for the support provided by the Fijian Government, families and friends in Fiji and around the world.

They affirmed their commitment to Fiji’s development and wellbeing through initiatives that support the mandates of the Fijian Government, to ensure that no one is left behind.
