Fijian Prime Minister today offered his heartfelt thanks to Mr Kavin Chand, Mrs Kamila Singh and officials of the Fiji Disaster Relief Society (FDRS) in Vancouver for their effort in mobilising the Fijian- Canadian diaspora for their generous support towards Fiji’s TC Yasa recovery and rehabilitation.
The Fiji Disaster Relief Society (FDRS) of Canada today deposited FJ$27,325 into the Prime Minister’s Cyclone Relief and Rehabilitation Fund from Vancouver, Canada. This followed a community fundraising effort over the New Year; using Community Radio – Radio Fiji Mirchi and social media platforms.
The Prime Minister’s National Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund for TC Yasa is being utilised to support National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) effort in having an integrated, and coordinated national response to TC Yasa recovery and rehabilitation.
Speaking on behalf of the Prime Minister, Permanent Secretary Mr Yogesh Karan extended his appreciation to FDRS of Canada for recognizing that the Prime Minister’s Fund is an “excellent way in which Fijian diaspora can help Fiji to build back better”.
The Fund, he said, is “highly transparent and supports recovery and rehabilitation based on need and priority and follows no other criteria”.
Mr Karan told Canada’s FDRS and Fijian diaspora that this “is the most professional and effective way in which, we can ensure that no family is left behind and no community is left behind during this difficult and long recovery”.
PS Karan thanked officials of FDRS and Fijian diaspora in Canada for their support during an “exceptionally difficult time when Canadians themselves are suffering so heavily from COVID-19 pandemic and when community fundraising events were so difficult to organize. This was an exceptional effort and it demonstrated the warm feelings and solidarity that Fijians had with their home country during this difficult period”.
