Communiqué
The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Djibouti to the United Nations in New York, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Siad Doualeh, signed the BBNJ Treaty this Friday, May 9, 2025, one month ahead of the United Nations Ocean Conference scheduled to take place in Nice, France.
The signing of this important treaty, adopted under the auspices of the United Nations and aimed at protecting marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, underscores Djibouti’s commitment, repeatedly affirmed by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Ismail Omar Guelleh, to the preservation of the oceans. It further strengthens the country’s role as a leading regional actor in maritime governance and environmental diplomacy.
The treaty also promotes capacity-building and the transfer of marine technologies, thereby offering Djibouti the opportunity to benefit from scientific cooperation that will enhance its oceanographic research and environmental monitoring capabilities.
To date, 114 countries and international organizations have signed the treaty, marking a strong global commitment to protecting the oceans for future generations.
