UAE leads discussions on achieving gender equality at the Commission on the Status of Women

New York - The UAE engaged in critical discussions as part of the 60th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, held from 14 to 24 March 2016. Topics of these discussions focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment, as well as the impact of women on justice, humanitarian aid delivery, information communications technologies (ICTs), and sustainable development.

New York - On the occasion of the International Day of Happiness (March 20), Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, delivered remarks on the UAE’s efforts to foster happiness at home and abroad, as well as the planned work of the newly appointed Minister of State for Happiness, Her Excellency Ohood Al Roumi. Ambassador Nusseibeh spoke as part of a panel briefing hosted by the United Nations Department of Public Information.

The event was hosted by UN Women and focused on the importance of achieving gender equality as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes targets on gender parity, empowerment of all women and girls, ensuring inclusive and quality education for all, and promoting lifelong learning.

UAE Welcomes UN Secretary-General's Initiative To Prevent Violent Extremism

New York - The UAE has welcomed the adoption of Draft Resolution 70/40 on the Secretary-General's plan of action to prevent violent extremism, saying that the plan needs to address factors that propel extremism, most notably foreign occupation and "State terrorism," and address the issue of accountability for states that compromise the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of nations.

High-Level Panel On Humanitarian Financing Report Launches In Dubai, UAE

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, welcomed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and other senior UN officials, humanitarian practitioners, and corporate leaders to International Humanitarian City in Dubai for the launch of the report of the High-Level Panel on Humanitarian Financing. The report, “Too important to fail – addressing the humanitarian financing gap”, was prepared by nine eminent experts from government, the private sector, and civil society. The UN Secretary General commissioned the group to write the report in response to the growing gap between humanitarian needs and resources available. The panel of experts was co-chaired by Kristalina Georgieva, Vice President of the European Commission, and Sultan Nazrin Shah, Ruler of Perek, Malaysia.
