Tuvalu supported the Declaration on the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) on 21 September 2025.
Hon. Paulson Panapa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, represented Tuvalu in endorsing the Declaration, which reaffirmed commitment to international humanitarian and human rights law. It emphasized the safety of aid workers, particularly national and local personnel, and called for safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance.
The Declaration also underscored accountability for attacks against humanitarian staff, the promotion of gender equality, and stronger global cooperation to protect humanitarian operations.
For Tuvalu, this step reflected a principled stance in championing the rights of vulnerable populations, from those facing the climate crisis to communities affected by conflict and disaster. It also strengthened Tuvalu’s partnerships within the United Nations and humanitarian actors, and amplified Tuvalu’s voice in global efforts to protect human dignity and security.
