Tuvalu Commissioner of Police, Mr. Matatia Makaili, and Inspector Mr. Eliu Luao participated in the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS), held in New York from 7–8 July 2026.

The Summit provided a valuable platform for police leaders to exchange good practices, discuss emerging security challenges, and strengthen partnerships between United Nations Police and national law enforcement agencies.

Speaking during the third session on the theme, "Enhancing International Cooperation to Address Transnational Challenges," Commissioner Makaili highlighted the unique security challenges facing the Pacific region and called for the establishment of dedicated coordination frameworks, including:
• A Pacific Maritime Security Coordination Centre
• A Pacific Climate Security Taskforce
• A Pacific Law Enforcement Capacity Initiative
• A Pacific Regional Prosecution Network
Recognising the increasing incidence of transnational criminal activity across the Pacific Ocean, which often disregards national borders and sovereignty, Commissioner Makaili called for enhanced cooperation with the United Nations to strengthen border security and regional law enforcement capabilities.

Commissioner Matatia also expressed his sincere appreciation to Australia for its continued support, which enabled Tuvalu's participation in the Summit.
