At the High-Level Meeting on Critical Energy Transition Minerals held on Tuesday 14 July 2026 at the United Nations Trusteeship Council Chamber, Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Panapasi Nelesone shared Tuvalu’s perspective on supporting energy transition but emphasised that it must be grounded in equity, justice and responsible resource management. The transition provides an important opportunity for developing countries to strengthen energy security and diversify their economies.

Tuvalu has strong renewable potential especially in solar and ocean-based energy, but it cannot realise it alone. Better technology transfer, predictable financing, stronger systems, and greater institutional capacity through strengthened partnerships is critical.

He urged therefore the UN Task Force on Critical Energy Transition Minerals and partners to align action with the UN’s guiding principles and recommendations, especially on human rights, fairness, transparency, value addition, and international cooperation.
