Tuvalu’s Minister of Education Calls for Youth-Led Ocean Action at SDG 14 Event

Date:
Tuesday, 22 April 2025

On April 15, Tuvalu’s Minister of Education delivered an inspiring statement at the side event "Youth for Sustainable Oceans – Mobilization and Actions", emphasizing the powerful role of youth in advancing SDG 14: Life Below Water.

Using the beloved figure of Moana of Motunui as a symbol, the Minister highlighted the courage and responsibility of young people across Oceania in leading efforts to protect our oceans. “Moana and Company,” as the Minister warmly called them, represent a generation ready to confront pollution, overfishing, and climate change with bold, informed action.

Tuvalu is already feeling the harsh realities of climate change — from rising sea levels to coral bleaching. In response, the government is rolling out programs to equip youth with the knowledge, skills, and tools to become ocean stewards. These include education on sustainable fishing, marine conservation, and community-driven eco-tourism.

But the Minister stressed that local action must be supported by global solidarity. Governments, international organizations, and the private sector must join hands to scale youth-led ocean initiatives.

Let us work together to empower today’s young leaders — our Moanas — and ensure a thriving ocean for generations to come.
