PSIDS Chair Hosts Meeting with ICJ President

The PSIDS Chair, H.E. Ambassador Mr Tapugao Falefou, Permanent Representative of Tuvalu, convened an ambassadorial-level meeting with H.E. Judge Yuji Iwasawa, President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), to discuss the Court’s growing workload, its 2026 budget request, and its advisory opinion on climate change.

The ICJ President highlighted a significant rise in case volume and underscored the importance of ensuring the Court is adequately resourced to maintain the quality and timeliness of its judgments. PSIDS Ambassadors reiterated their longstanding support for the ICJ and its critical role in upholding international law, especially as it relates to climate change and sea level rise.

The PSIDS Chair concluded the discussion by reaffirming the group’s commitment to strengthening international legal institutions and noted that members would continue to advocate for the ICJ’s work through their respective capitals.
