H.E. Tapugao Falefou, Permanent Representative of Tuvalu and Chair of PSIDS, delivered the PSIDS statement this morning at the UN General Assembly to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter
He reaffirmed the Pacific’s longstanding commitment to the Charter’s principles, highlighting contributions to peacekeeping, international law, ocean governance, and climate diplomacy.
For PSIDS, the climate crisis remains the most urgent test of that system. As H.E. Falefou stated: “We have taken the climate crisis to the International Court of Justice, advanced marine biodiversity protection, and championed the BBNJ Agreement.”
The statement welcomed the UN80 initiative as a timely opportunity to reform the system and emphasized that reform must lead to delivery on climate finance, the loss and damage fund, and the 1.5°C goal.
The most vulnerable deserve a system built with them in mind.
