The Regional Preparatory Meeting on the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea concerning the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) took place in Koror, Palau, from 31 March to 4 April 2025.
As part of the opening session, a video message from H.E. Mr. Tapugao Falefou, Permanent Representative of Tuvalu to the United Nations, was presented. In his remarks, Ambassador Falefou extended heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of Palau for their warm hospitality and for hosting this significant regional event, which brought together representatives from across the Pacific.
He also took the opportunity to commend Palau for being the first country in the world to ratify the BBNJ Agreement—an extraordinary milestone and a shining example for fellow Pacific Island nations as they navigate their own pathways toward signing and ratification.
Reflecting on the importance of collective effort, Ambassador Falefou noted, “Greatness often begins with small steps; big ideas often begin in small rooms like this one.” His message underscored the shared commitment of Pacific nations to the sustainable stewardship of marine biodiversity.
The Ambassador’s address was both impactful and uplifting, setting a strong tone for the days that followed.
We once again extend our deepest appreciation to Palau for its leadership and generosity in hosting this important meeting.
