Today marked the first day of negotiations at the United Nations on Sea-Level Rise and international law, where Ambassador and Permanent Representative H.E. Mr. Tapugao Falefou delivered Tuvalu’s national statement.
In his intervention, Ambassador Falefou reaffirmed Tuvalu’s position that sea-level rise cannot extinguish statehood, sovereignty, or international legal personality under international law. He also emphasized the existential realities faced by low-lying atoll nations, where rising seas continue to threaten communities, cultures, livelihoods, and the connection of people to their homelands.
Tuvalu further highlighted the urgent need for stronger climate action, enhanced adaptation support, and financing mechanisms that respond to the realities of vulnerable States, while reaffirming the importance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
Tuvalu looks forward to engaging constructively throughout the negotiations and working together with partners to ensure meaningful outcomes for vulnerable nations and future generations.
