The Coalition on Addressing Sea-Level Rise and its Existential Threats (C-SET) organized a half-day Expert-Level Thematic Workshop, bringing together leading experts, practitioners, and Member States to deepen understanding across the four key thematic areas identified in the UN High-Level Meeting of September 2024.
The discussions provided valuable insights to help inform ongoing work toward a UN political declaration that responds to the growing urgency of sea-level rise.
In the opening segment, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Tapugao Falefou highlighted the stark human reality behind the sea-level rise crisis: from coastal inundation to the loss of culture, heritage, and dignity. He emphasized that addressing it requires strong, sustained partnerships and concrete action to scale up adaptation and mitigation, localize climate finance to reach frontline communities, and deliver practical solutions through initiatives such as the Rising Nations Initiative, the Communities Climate Adaptation Facility, and the Pacific Resilience Facility.
As negotiations move forward, the declaration must go beyond rhetoric to deliver real support, legal certainty, and urgent global action to address both the drivers and impacts of sea-level rise.
To help set the scene for his remarks and for the whole workshop, Ambassador Falefou played a video clip to highlight the lived reality of Tuvalu, in relation to sea-level rise.
