Our beginings

Tuvalu became the 189th member of the United Nations in September 5, 2000.

In 2001, the Permanent Mission of Tuvalu to the United Nations was established in Manhattan, New York. 
 

Our Mandate

The raising of Tuvalu's flag on 5 September 2000, in the midst of 188 Member States of the United Nations at the horizon of the New Millennium, is a milestone and new chapter in the history of Tuvalu when it proudly joined the International family as one of the smallest members of the United Nations. Subsequently, despite its limited resources and in view of the lack of diplomatic representation in many major capitals of the world, the Government of Tuvalu established its Permanent Mission at the United Nations in New York with the initial objectives to:

     • Build a stronger international identity and presence for Tuvalu
     • Form and strengthen friendships and partnerships with UN members
     • Support Tuvalu's Foreign policy
     • Uphold the ideals and principles of the UN charter

At present the Mission's priority issues on its agenda are:

     • Promotion of Tuvalu's development aspirations as prescribed in its National Strategy for Sustainable Development Plan (2021-2030), Te Kete
     • Save Tuvalu from climate change and its adverse impacts 
     • Securing new and additional development assistance from donor countries 
     • Promote the Tuvalu Trust Fund 
     • Retain Tuvalu as a real deal LDC 
     • Finding job opportunities for Tuvalu's seafarers
