INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT H.E. Mr. Sukhbold Sukhee, AMBASSADOR AND PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MONGOLIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS ON THE DRAFT RESOLUTION ENTITLED “EDUCATION FOR DEMOCRACY”

Mr. President,

I have the honor to introduce the draft resolution A/73/L.50 entitled “Education for democracy” on behalf of the co-sponsors representing various regions and my own country Mongolia.

The text, that has been agreed by all Delegations attending the informal consultations, includes meaningful advancements to promote education for democracy.

We reaffirm the fundamental link between democratic governance, peace, development and the promotion and protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms, which are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. And also recognize that education contributes to the strengthening of democracy, good governance and the rule of law at all levels. 

Mr. President,

In the new draft resolution, we are

- Recalling that the Sustainable Development Goals and targets are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development, and acknowledging the importance, of taking measures to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, including expanded opportunities for all children, particularly, girls to access quality education;

-also Recognizing that education for democracy

Moreover, we acknowledge the important contributions of civil society, academia, the private sector, and other stakeholders including United Nations agencies, funds and programs in support of democracy and education for democracy.

Mr. President,

I wish to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all delegations which took active participation in our discussions on the draft text, as well as to all co-sponsors for their support.

In conclusion, Mr. President, on behalf of all co-sponsors may I express our hope that this draft resolution will receive unanimous support from Member States and wide co-sponsorship as in the previous year.
