Date:
Tuesday, 24 November 2015

On 23 November, 2015, the draft resolution on "Improvement of the Situation Women and Girls in Rural Areas" initiated by Mongolia has been unanimously adopted by the Third Committee of the 70th session of the UNGA.

The name of this resolution which used to be "Improvement of the Situation Women and Girls in Rural Areas" has been extended to "Improvement of the Situation Women and Girls in Rural Areas" in relation to "Goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls" in the recently adopted Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and outcome documents of other global conferences and fora on women's and population development issues.

This year's text of the resolution has been updated by important languages on supporting political, socio-economic empowerment of all groups of rural women, urging about rural women being at the forefront of coping with the impacts of climate change, natural disasters and post-conflict situations, addressing the lack of quality, accessible, timely, reliable data on rural women and girls to help with the measurement of progress and to ensure that no one is left behind and outlining importance of a gender-sensitive education system which considers the specific needs of rural women and girls and others.

The Mongolia-led resolution had received a wide co-sponsorship of 105 UN Member States.
