President Of The Republic Of Malawi His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera Delivers His Statement At This Years United Nations Summit On Biodiversity

The first United Nations Summit on Biodiversity focused on the crisis facing humanity from the degradation of biodiversity and the urgent need to accelerate action on biodiversity for sustainable development.The Summit provides a chance for Heads of State and other leaders to raise ambition for the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework to be adopted at the 15th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2021
As the current Chairperson of Least Developed Countries (LDC,s), His Excellency DR. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi addressed the United Nations through a pre-recorded statement on the urgent action needed on biodiversity for sustainable development.
Stating dissatisfaction that the world could not deliver on the 20 goals set per the Secretary-General’s Global Biodiversity outlook 2020, His Excellency advised all parties involved to take collective measures to stop the ongoing devastation of biodiversity, or we risk millions of animal and plant species to be extinct in a decade or sooner. He stated that the destruction of our natural environment and habitats endangers public health, pointing to Covid-19 effects as an example of such risks we face, which impacts the Least Developed Countries the most.
His Excellency DR. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera urged for building a global sustainable economy, incorporating the reduction of inequalities, avoiding rampant wastage of resources and addressing environmental degradation among other measures as attainable solutions to the problem we face.
The President also proposed that the international biodiversity funding to the LCD,s should be doubled by 2030 to help in meeting the LDC,s goals on the matter. Watch the whole statement in the media section of our page
