Madam Chair,
At the outset, I congratulate you and other bureau members on your election to lead the Sixth Committee of the 81st Session. My delegation assures you of our support and cooperation.
The Lao PDR commends the Secretary-General for his report on the United Nations Program of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law. We are pleased to note that the assistance program has made significant contributions in enhancing capacity-building and international law networks for member states to foster a better understanding of international laws.
The Lao PDR recognizes that the Codification Division of the Office of Legal Affairs is responsible for the implementation of the Programme of Assistance to ensure the rule of law plays a vital role in addressing global challenges, ensuring international peace, security, and advancing Sustainable Development, particularly Goal 16 on promoting peaceful, inclusive societies, access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions. Therefore, building capacity in international law is an essential task to further deepen knowledge and understanding of international law in member states for promoting and strengthening the rule of law at national and international levels. On this note, the Lao PDR welcomes the efforts made by the Office of Legal Affairs to implement activities under the International Law Fellowship Program and to further develop the Audiovisual Library of International Law.
Madam Chair,
The Lao PDR notes with appreciation the contribution made by the program to strengthen the capacity of international law for member states, particularly for developing countries. We, therefore, strongly encourage the United Nations to continue to implement this program by increasing the number of fellowships, particularly the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing countries, and promoting online and offline public access to information on international laws. On this note, greater financial assistance is of great importance to ensure the sustainability of the Program. We thank all contributed countries and organizations for the support given in the past years.
Furthermore, the Lao PDR has organized a series of workshops on awareness raising on public international law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law for government officials, school of laws, and other stakeholders at the central and local levels to enhance their understanding of their understanding, mandates, and obligations for the implementation of domestic laws and international law as a whole.
Madam Chair,
To conclude my delegation reaffirms our commitment and full support to the Program. The Lao PDR is committed to continue working closely with the international and partners to participate actively for wider appreciation of international law.
I thank you Madam Chair.
