Ambassador Anouparb Vongnorkeo, Permanent Representative of Lao PDR to the United Nations at the 76th United Nations General Assembly, 77th Plenary Meeting “Strengthening of the United Nations system - Item 124: Special report of the Security Council (A/76/853)”; Debate Pursuant to Resolution 76/262
The situation in Korean Peninsula remains delicate with long historical complexities, which requires concerted efforts by all parties concerned to restore mutual trust and confidence, which will ultimately lead to political and diplomatic solutions to the current challenges.
As a peace-loving nation, the Lao PDR has become a party to several international instruments on disarmament and non-proliferation, including the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), the Teary on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), and the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), among others. In this connection, the Lao PDR maintains its consistent policy towards total elimination of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
The Lao PDR reiterates its unwavering support to peace, security and denuclearization in the Korean Peninsula and settlement of disputes through peaceful means and constructive dialogue, which will contribute to the maintenance of regional and global peace and security. For this reason, the Lao PDR calls for the international community to continue creating the environment conducive for furthering advancing diplomatic negotiations and refrain from any action that could escalate the tension.
We urge all Member States to redouble the efforts to implement all initiatives and international instruments including the relevant UNSC Resolutions.
I thank you.
