Mr. President,
I would like to begin by extending my delegation’s sincere congratulations to you and other members of the Bureau on your successful election.
Our appreciation also goes to the Executive Director for her comprehensive review of UNICEF’s work in 2024 and the outline of key priorities for 2025. My delegation commends the Executive Director and all UNICEF staff - at headquarters, in regional offices, and in the field - for their unwavering commitment to protecting and promoting the well-being of children amid the global challenges we are facing.
This is only the second time that the Lao PDR has had the honor of serving on the Executive Board; the first time was in 2001-2003. Since 1973, UNICEF has been the longest-serving UN agency in the country. Over the years, UNICEF has continued to strengthen its collaboration with our Government counterparts and stakeholders across key sectors, including health, nutrition, education, water and sanitation, and child protection, to uphold the rights of every child.
In recent years, the Lao PDR has made significant strides in reducing under-five and neonatal mortality rates. In child protection, we are proud to be the first ASEAN country to ban corporal punishment. In education, we have made meaningful progress in promoting digital learning for all. UNICEF has provided critical support in developing robust social sector policies and implementing comprehensive interventions at both national and community levels.
Despite these achievements, we are mindful of the challenges posed by the current fiscal climate and the ever-growing impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on children’s well-being. We call upon the global community to sustain and increase investments in child-focused interventions. By strengthening partnerships - bilaterally, multilaterally, and through regional forums - we can ensure that no child is left behind.
Thank you.
