Madam President,
- I have the honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
- As conveyed at last year’s SDG Summit, ASEAN is strongly committed to achieve sustainable development in the region. This commitment embodies the universal call to end poverty, to protect the planet, and to continuously improve the livelihood and well-being of our peoples.
- We continue to uphold the complementarities between ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the 2030 Agenda, or the Complementarities Initiative, as well as our work towards ASEAN Community Vision 2045, with shared principles and values of people-centered development that leaves no one behind.
- There is a continued momentum of growth in the region. We will continue to work towards strengthening the region’s position as an epicenter of growth by navigating and responding to global challenges and unleashing the region’s full growth potential.
- At this point, allow me to highlight ASEAN’s priorities:
- First, we remain steadfast in our work to narrowing development gaps, enhancing SDGs localization, including through promoting rural development and collaboration, while continuously empowering our youth, women, persons with disabilities, elderly persons, MSMEs, and migrant workers.
- Second, we reiterate our commitment to work with our partners to mainstream and implement the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific through concrete and practical projects and activities based on its objectives and principles. We look forward to continuing our work in building a resilient economic architecture, supported by resilient supply chains, greater connectivity and accelerated digital transformation.
- Third, we are committed to accelerate just and inclusive energy transitions while ensuring energy security, reliability, accessibility, sustainability, resiliency, and affordability.
- Fourth, we are committed to increase investment in human resources development including in quality education system, improving regional health system, infrastructure and cooperation, and to work to better prevent, prepare, and response to future pandemic, emerging challenges and future shocks.
- Fifth, we commit to scale-up cooperation in disaster risk reduction, and address climate change and other environmental issues, to support the achievement of a resilient ASEAN Community.
- As we look ahead to the Summit of the Future, we will carry this momentum forward as reflected in the theme of Lao PDR’s ASEAN Chairmanship “Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience.” Lao PDR, as the 2024 ASEAN Chair, in collaboration with Thailand, will organize “the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific Forum: Towards UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030” on 30 August 2024 in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
- The Summit of the Future should be an opportunity for us not just to recall our commitments during the SDG Summit but to chart our course in more fully implementing the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs, and to reinvigorate the multilateral system
- We reaffirm our support to the strengthening of multilateralism, with the UN at its core, and its mutually reinforcing nature with regionalism, by solidifying adherence to the principles of the UN Charter.
Thank you.
