H.E. Mr. Thongloun SISOULITH
Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic
For the commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations

21 September 2020 (Please check against delivery)

Mr. President,
Mr. Secretary-General of the United Nations, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of the Government and people of the Lao people’s Democratic Republic, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the United Nations during this meaningful event to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations, which was founded based on the aspiration of all mankind, aspiring for peaceful co-existence, cooperation and mutual assistance to make this world a better place of peace, stability and prosperity.

Throughout the last 75 years, we have witnessed a number of achievements and successes made under the United Nations. Many countries have gained their national independence and the right to self- determination; dialogue and consultation have become the principle and trend in solving the disputes by peaceful means. Development cooperation has been enhanced leading to millions of people escaped from poverty. Racial discrimination and gender inequality have been progressively addressed, all this has contributed to the maintenance of international peace and security and sustainable development.

Despite the fact that the current global environment is very much different from what it was 7 decades ago, I am of the view that the primary objective and principles as stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations continue to be highly valuable and relevant to the current global context. Therefore, all Member States are required to jointly promote the noble goals

and objectives of the United Nations and help improve its mechanisms conducive to the current setting aimed at ensuring the effective execution of its role, mandates and duties in addressing the global challenges that we are facing today.

Lao PDR stands ready to actively work with all Members in strengthening the United Nations to effectively carry out its mandates for maintaining peace, socio-economic development and prosperity of all nations.

Thank you.
