STATE MINISTER CHARLES JR AND IRISH AMBASSDORS DISCUSS POST COTONOU AGREEMENT FRAMEWORK

Date:
Friday, 15 February 2019

During a Courtesy Call with Irish Ambassadors, State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr. expressed the hope that the Post Cotonou framework, which will define the rules of engagement for the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States and the European Union (EU), following the expiration of the Cotonou Partnership Agreement in 2020, will redound to the region’s benefit.
“It is hoped that the Post Cotonou framework will allow for comprehensive engagement of the Caribbean and not reduce development support. It is really a challenge for the larger countries to demonstrate their intentions,” Senator Charles Jr. noted.
His Excellency Jim Kelly, Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland and Her Excellency Dympna Hayes, Special Envoy of the Government of Ireland had this week, visited the Foreign State Minister at the Ministry’s New Kingston offices.
Both Ambassadors expressed Ireland’s commitment to developing its partnership with the Caribbean, especially in the Brexit context. On the subject of Disaster Risk Management, the Ambassadors noted that Ireland understands the vulnerabilities – both climatic and economic – of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The three, along with a team from the Ministry, also discussed United Nations Candidatures and Diaspora Engagement.
