JOHNSON SMITH TAKES SEAT IN CELAC QUARTET, PARTICIPATES IN CELAC-EU MINISTERIAL MEETINGS IN BRUSSELS

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smithis in Brussels for meetings of the Foreign Ministers of CELAC and the Second EU CELAC Foreign Ministers Meeting.
Johnson Smith will represent the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the Extended Quartet of Community of Latin America and Caribbean States (CELAC) until December 2018 having assumed the position on Monday, July 16 in Brussels Belgium joining the Foreign Ministers of Bolivia, Ecuador and El Salvador and Dominica Republic.
Johnson Smith also represented Jamaicaat the second bi-regional Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Community of Latin America and Caribbean States- European Union (CELAC- EU) held under the theme, "Building Bridges and strengthening our partnership to face global challenges,".
Minister Johnson Smith participated in meetings of CELAC Foreign Ministers, CARIFORUM Ministers, meetings of CELAC and EU Foreign Ministers as well as certain bi-lateral meetings.
Minister Johnson Smith also participated in a meeting of CARIFORUM Foreign Ministers’ with High Representative Federica Mogherini and other senior officials of the European Commission where matters of critical importance to the Caribbean such as ACP/EU Post Cotonour negotiations, climate change, resilience and disaster management, and tax cooperation were addressed.
Other areas of focus of the CELAC-EU Meetings included: sustainable development and economic advancement, challenges such as climate change and threats to Multilateralism.
Foreign Ministers committed to reinforced cooperation in multilateral fora to uphold shared values such as democracy, human rights, good governance and multilateral rules-based trading system and the rule of law.
