Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Foreign Trade has expressed condolences to the families and friends of the
victims of last Thursday’s tragic collapse of a pedestrian bridge at the
Florida International University (FIU), reported to have claimed six lives.
As media reports have sadly indicated, a Jamaican man, Navaro Brown, 37, was
one of the six victims. This information has now been confirmed officially by
the American authorities. Minister Johnson Smith and the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade offer prayers and condolences to Mr. Brown’s
family and friends, as efforts are made to personally contact Mr. Brown’s next of
kin.
The Minister also noted that investigations continue regarding the cause of the
Accident. “The Ministry will continue to monitor and update the public if new
information becomes available,” she said.
According to the last official census conducted by the United States Census
Bureau in 2010, there are 206,665 Jamaicans in Florida.
