Foreign Affairs Ministry gets approval for new office complex

The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation in downtown Kingston. 

THE Building and Town Planning Committee of the Kingston and St AndrewMunicipal Corporation (KSAMC) on Wednesday approved a buildingapplication for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade to build an 11-storey office complex at 20 Port Royal Street in downtown Kingston.The committee received the application on May 24.

The multi-storey structure, with 17 department levels and a staff of 285 people, will have a conference room, a children's centre, a dining area as well as an area for medical care, leisure and recreation, and an auxiliary room.

A two-storey centre annex is also to be constructed at the location and the proposal is to use it for dining and other activities.

An area of the complex has also been designated for 95 parking spaces, four of which will be reserved for the disabled. One parking space has also been proposed for loading and offloading.

One of the conditions recommended by Norman Shand, the chief engineering officer of the KSAMC, is that the ministry put in a minimum of 246 parking spaces — 89 of which must be provided within the site of the complex at 20 Port Royal Street.

The additional 155 parking spaces for the ministry will be at Lot 20, Kingston Waterfront.
