The Fiji Police Commissioner, Brigadier Sitiveni Qiliho, is currently in New York, to attend the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit II, from 20 -21 June 2018 at the United Nations Headquarters.

The Summit brings together senior police leaders and international experts from across the World.

The Summit focusses on challenges to United Nations Peacekeeping and the growing role of policing in maintaining peace, in humanitarian crisis and in conflict zones.

Increasingly UN police are involved in work that helps to prevent conflict and in supporting peacebuilding efforts. These are some of the core skills needed by officers deployed in UN missions. The Summit will focus on this important issue.

UN police missions are also involved in supporting capacity building in conflict affected areas. Building inclusive and representative police forces that promotes gender inclusion, that ensures that peacebuilding and peacekeeping focus on women and children especially requires appropriately trained officials.

The Summit will be presided over by the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.

Brigadier Qiliho during his visit, also paid a courtesy visit to Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr Satyendra Prasad. They discussed ways of expanding participation by Fiji’s police in UN Peacekeeping.

Brigadier Qiliho will also be holding bilateral meetings on the margins of the Summit with other United Nations Senior Police Executives.

Since the 1980s, Fiji has provided 1,272 Police Officers, serving in 15 United Nations Peacekeeping missions around the world. Currently there are 48 Police Officers serving in 5 United Nations missions globally.
